European patent applications at the EPO grew by 2.7% in 2014 to a record high of 151 981. This confirms that Europe continues
to be a key market for technology and innovation.

Nearly half (49%) of all European patent applications in 2014 came from the EPO member states, with European firms filing
2.2% more European patent applications than in the previous year. The leading countries of origin overall were the US, Germany,
Japan, France and the Netherlands.
