The EPO granted 64 613 patents in 2014. This was 3.1% less than in 2013, after three years of growth, but still above the 2011 level.

Granted patents per country of origin

Most patents were granted to US companies, followed by applicants from Germany, Japan, France and Switzerland. The share of grants to European companies increased to 51% of the total. The number of patents granted to Chinese companies is growing rapidly, albeit from a low number.
